How do I type accented letters?

Tap and hold on a letter on the keyboard and you’ll see a list of available special characters appear above the letter.

While holding down on the letter with your finger, slide up and highlight the accented letter or symbol you want with your finger. Lift your finger to select it.
 
 

How can I take a photo without camera shake?

You can use the volume buttons on the side of your iPhone or iPad to take a photo. It makes taking a photo more stable than using the on-screen button, and makes your phone feel like a traditional point and shoot camera. Plus it allows you take a photo whilst wearing gloves!
 
 

How can I adjust my screen when I’m using my iPhone or iPad in the evening?

If you use your iPhone or iPad in the evening, you can adjust the display so that it gives off a warmer, less blue light which won’t affect your sleep.

It’s called Night Shift. Here’s how to turn it on:

Go to Settings > Display > Brightness, then select Night Shift.
 
 

How can I take a photo AND record a video at the same time?

Go to the camera app and slide the menu at the bottom of the screen to ‘Video’.

Tap the red button to begin recording your video.

A white button will appear in the corner of the screen. That is for taking photos. Tap the white button whenever you want to take a photo of what’s on the screen whilst you’re recording a video.
 
 

How can I read a web page as text-only – without adverts or other distractions?

Open Safari and navigate to the website you’d like to read. Then tap the ‘Reader’ button on the left of the address bar. It looks like a series of stacked lines.

You’ll see a simple screen of text which is much easier to read.

To disable Reader View, tap the Reader button again.
 
 

How do I dictate an email or a message instead of typing it?

You can write emails, text messages and notes by speaking into your iPhone or iPad: tap on the little microphone icon on your keyboard and dictate. Your words will turn into text.
 
 

How can I turn my iPhone into a spirit level?

Launch the Compass app that comes pre-installed on your iPhone. Then, swipe left on the compass screen and you’ll see the spirit level.

It measures horizontally (hold your iPhone flat) or vertically (hold it upright).
 
 

How can I make changes to my keyboard settings whilst I’m typing?

Tap and hold down the emoji key on your keyboard. A little menu will pop up. Select ‘Keyboard Settings’ to make changes, for example to turn off Auto-Correction or Predictive Text.
 
 

How do I take a screenshot?

To capture a screen on your iPhone or iPad, press and hold the side or top button and immediately click the Home button (or Volume Up button if you have an iPad Pro or iPhone X), then release both buttons.

Tap the thumbnail to see the screenshot, or press and hold it to share it.
 
 

If you’re looking for a specific word within a web page, simply type that word in the search bar at the top of the screen and scroll down to the ‘On This Page section’ to find each instance of that word on the page.
 
 

How can I ensure I never miss emails from important contacts?

Make sure you don’t miss emails from important contacts by using VIP. In Mail, go to the Mailboxes screen and tap the ‘i’ next to VIP (it has a blue star next to it) below Inbox. To add a contact to your VIP list, tap Add VIP and choose a contact.
 
 

How can I silence calls and alerts so I’m not interrupted?

With Do Not Disturb, you can silence calls, alerts, and notifications that you get while your device is locked.

Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb to turn on Do Not Disturb. When Do Not Disturb is on, you’ll see a crescent moon in the status bar.

If you don’t want to be disturbed at a certain time, you can set a schedule. Tap Settings > Do Not Disturb and turn on Scheduled. Then set a time.
 
 

How do I type words or phrases I often need faster?

Use Text Replacement to type words and phrases you often need – for example, your phone number, email address or words you often misspell – faster.

To set up Text Replacement, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.

Tap the plus sign on the top right, then type in the phrase that you would like to shorten.
Next, type in the shortcut you would like to use. For example, “em” might be for your email address and “ph” might be for a phone number.

Tap Save in the top right.

Whenever you type the replacement shortcut you created, the corresponding text appears. Simply tap the Space bar on your keyboard.
 
 

How do I make the screen rotate when I turn my phone on its side?

First access the Control Centre by swiping up from the bottom edge of any screen. On iPhone X or later or iPad with iOS 12 or later, swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen. Then tap the Orientation Lock button (it looks like an arrow curving around a lock) and tap on it to turn it off.
